Web Services Application: Knowledge and Learning Services (KALS)

Workshop Description

This workshop addresses a specific application domain for Web services: knowledge work at the intersection of the two supposedly converging fields of knowledge management and technology-enhanced learning. While knowledge work increasingly addresses flexibility, collaboration, communication, learning, sharing and interaction that involve distributed services supplied by a multitude of heterogeneous systems, there is a growing demand for knowledge and learning services that fulfil these requirements with underlying semantic support. These services can be combined into an enterprise knowledge infrastructure (EKI). An EKI is a comprehensive ICT platform for collaboration and knowledge sharing with advanced services for discovery, for supporting the knowledge life cycle, for collaboration and learning built on top that have to be integrated on the basis of semantically richly described Web services which are personalized for participants networked in communities. These Web services have to be composed in order to support knowledge and learning processes ultimately targeted at increasing productivity of knowledge work. This workshop thus aims at a discussion of relevant applications of Web service technology and the composition of semantically richly described Web services in particular. The targeted application domain aims at integrating diverse tools and systems that support knowledge work, a specialization of enterprise application integration scenarios. This domain poses more profound requirements towards the description of the services and the exchange of contents.

Topics

Papers are welcome addressing the workshop theme from a computer science, information systems, business, pedagogical or didactical perspective or combinations thereof. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

• specific requirements for description, selection and deployment of knowledge and learning services
• typology of KS and LS
• integration of KS and LS in the workplace of knowledge workers
• integration into enterprise knowledge infrastructures, collaborative systems, knowledge and learning management systems
• model-driven composition/orchestration of KS and LS
• knowledge-intensive business processes guiding the management of KS and LS
• pedagogical and didactical concepts for selection, adaptation and combination of KS and LS
• convergence of learning and knowledge services
• context and semantic description of knowledge and learning services
• mobile and ambient learning and knowledge services
• standards to integrate knowledge and learning services
• business models for KS and LS
• trust and reputation mechanisms for KS and LS
• empirical results in knowledge and learning services
• prototypes
• cases studies

Organisation

• length: 1 day
• format: 90 minute slots with three papers à 25min presentation including discussion, last slot eventually reserved for plenum discussion
• language: English
• paper selection: double-blind review system with two reviews per submission by members of the program committee
• submission deadline: September 3, 2007
• notification of acceptance: September 27, 2007
• final paper: October 29, 2007
